Del Toro studied at the Instituto de Ciencias, at the University of Guadalaraja. Del Toro first got into film making when he was just 8 years old, while he was working with special effects and SFX artist, Dick Smith.
Following on from his work with Dick Smith, Del Toro spent 8 years as a visual effects designer, and then went on to form his own company; Necropia. Then in 1997, when Del Toro was 33, Hollywood approached him. He was then given a budget of $30 Million to shoot his second film; Mimic. During his time filming, Del Toro then learnt that his father, Federico Del Toro, was abducted in Guadalajara, which in result, made Del Toro and his family leave the country.
Del Toros work has a very wide range, from comic book movies, such as Blade 2 and Hellboy, to historical fantasys, such as El laberinto del fauno (Pans Labyrinth) and El espinazo del diablo (The Devils Backbone), the latter two being his best works. Both El laberinto del fauno and El espinazo del diablo have similar traits, they both have young children as the central protagonists, and both films deal with the struggle between childrens fantasy/horror, and living under a dictator ship.
